The João Roiz Ensemble continues the Escutar o Tempo series in Angra do Heroísmo with a set of concerts and activities featuring works by contemporary Portuguese composers, including one of my own.
Dates and venues:
On February 13, the ensemble will also hold educational sessions with students from the music conservatories of Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória. On February 5th, at 8:00 PM, the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa will perform my Fantasia Sobre Temas de Carlos Paredes as part of the centenary celebrations of Carlos Paredes at the Sala Luis Miguel Cintra, Teatro São Luiz, Lisbon.
The piece Fantasia Sobre Temas de Carlos Paredes draws from the music of Carlos Paredes, one of the greatest exponents of the Portuguese guitar. Based on his suite Lisboa e o Tejo, it reimagines five of its most striking themes: Canto do Amanhecer, Serenata, Canto da Rua, Canção Verdes Anos, and Canto do Trabalho. Years after orchestrating the complete suite for string orchestra and Portuguese guitar, I now revisit the material from a new perspective, transforming Paredes’ music into a piece that reflects my own musical language while honoring his unique sensitivity and intuition.
